Winning Streak Comes to an End in 4-2 Loss to Checkers

North Charleston, SC –The South Carolina Stingrays (22-7-1-3) fell to the Charlotte Checkers (15-9-3-1) 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena. The loss ended a 13 game winning streak for the Stingrays.

The Checkers jumped on the board first with a power-play goal at 9:37 of the first period from Kenny Roche. Roche’s 15 goal of the season was assisted by Tyler Doig and Steve Ward. The Stingrays answered back with a power-play tally of their own off the blade of forward Matt Fornataro at 19:11 from forwards Trent Campbell and Nikita Kashirsky. Both teams finished the opening period 1-for-1 on the man advantage.

The Stingrays grabbed their first lead of the game on the power play at 5:14 of the second period as rookie Rob Ricci lifted a wrist shot over the glove of Checkers goaltender Miika Wiikman from the bottom of the right-wing circle. Gregg Johnson and Josh Godfrey recorded the assists. The Checkers tied the contest late in the second period thanks to forward Randy Rowe at 19:42 from Tyler Doig. Rowe knocked in a centering feed from Doig along the left-wing post of Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford to end the second period scoring.

Charlotte went up 3-2 early in the third period with a lamp lighter from Andrew Carroll at 2:53 from T.J. Reynolds and Mike Taylor. Doig iced the contest for the Checkers at 15:57 from Michel Leveille and Wiikman to end their four-game winless skid against the Stingrays. Wiikman earned his fourth win of the season knocking away 28 of 30 Stingrays shots. Ford dropped his first game in eight starts kicking away 33 of 37 Checkers chances. South Carolina ended the night 2-for-4 on the power play while Charlotte finished 1-for-3.

The Stingrays travel out to Gwinnett Saturday, December 26 to battle the Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The Stingrays return home Sunday, December 27 at 4:00 p.m. against the Charlotte Checkers. Join the Stingrays on Sunday for Kid’s Day featuring $5 kid’s tickets and a pregame kid’s carnival.
