Wheeling, WV –The South Carolina Stingrays (30-12-4-4) wrapped up their season series against the Wheeling Nailers (23-18-2-1) with a loss, falling 5-3 in front of 2,110 at WesBanco Arena Sunday afternoon. Stingrays forwards Gregg Johnson and Scott Bartlett registered two points in the defeat.
The Nailers registered the only goal of the opening period off a drive from forward T.J. Fox at 16:57 beating Stingrays goaltender Parker Van Buskirk low stick-side. Forward Jordan Fox and defenseman Dan Henningson earned assists on Fox’s 17 goal of the season.
Stingrays forward Michael Dubuc tied the contest 33 seconds into the second period lifting a shot over the right shoulder of Nailers goaltender Adam Berkhoel. Bartlett recorded the lone assist. The Nailers reclaimed the lead at 6:22 as winger Colin Power tipped in a bouncing puck over Van Buskirk for his third tally of the season. Forwards Joey Haddad and Andrew Lord netted helpers. Lord made it a 3-1 Nailers lead at 11:03 from T. Fox and Henningson.
Haddad continued the scoring for the Nailers in the third period lighting the lamp at 11:27 from Lord and Power. Nailers forward Thomas Beauregard added another marker at 16:40 from defenseman Aaron Clarke to make it 5-1. Seconds later Stingrays rookie Dain Prewitt beat Berkhoel between the legs for his eighth of the year at 16:57 from Johnson and rookie Trevor Bruess. The Stingrays added another late tally at 19:05 as Bartlett danced around the Nailers defense along the right-wing boards and buried and off-angle shot to make it 5-3. Captain Matt Scherer andJohnson assisted Bartlett’s fourth goal of the season to complete the game scoring. Van Buskirk suffers his 11 loss of the season pushing away 31 of 36 Nailers shots. Berkhoel earned his second straight victory over the Stingrays pushing away 34 of 37 chances. The Stingrays ended the night 0-for-5 on the power play while the Nailers went 0-for-2.
