Stingrays Pepper Royals with 41 Shots in 4-2 Loss

North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays (38-19-6-6) fired 41 shots on net, but fell to the Reading Royals (35-27-1-4) 4-2 in front of 6,184 on The Post and Courier Hall of Fame Night at North Charleston Coliseum Friday. The loss closes the Stingrays’ regular season home schedule.

The Royals netted the only goal of the first period off a power-play tally from forward Andrew Sarauer at 13:30 beating Stingrays goaltender Shane Connelly between the legs with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right-wing circle.  Forward Stefano Giliati and center Marc Cavosie earned assists.

Stingrays defenseman Johann Kroll tied the contest at 12:43 of the second period beating Royals netminder Matt Dalton with a backhanded shot under the right arm. Forwards Gregg Johnson and Keith Johnson recorded assists on Kroll’s third goal of the season. Royals center Jimmy Fraser made it 2-1 with a shorthanded marker at 15:04 from Sarauer and defenseman Aaron Brocklehurst.
 
The Stingrays converted on the power play early in the third period as forward Nikita Kashirsky, who returned to the lineup for the first time since January 17, buried a rebound over the right pad of Dalton at 5:41 to tie the game at two. Forwards Trent Campbell and Michael Dubuc received assists. Brocklehurst reclaimed the lead for the Royals on the power play at 10:57 from winger Daniel Steiner and forward Ryan Cruthers. Reading iced the game with an empty-net goal at 19:39 from Steiner. Forward Ben Gordon and Cruthers potted assists. Connelly suffered his 14 loss of the season stopping 16 of 19 Royals shots. Dalton earned the win kicking away 39 of 41 Stingrays chances. The Royals finished the night 2-for-3 on the power play while the Stingrays went 1-for-5.
