Wings Topple Stingrays 5-1

Kalamazoo, MIThe South Carolina Stingrays (25-19-1-1) fell 5-1 to the Kalamazoo Wings (21-18-2-2) in their first-ever visit to Wings Stadium Friday night.

Wings forward Darryl Lloyd broke open the scoring at 12:17 of the first period tapping in a loose puck under the glove of Stingrays goaltender Andrew Loewen. Defensemen Ryan McGinnis and Jon Landry earned assists.  Forward Andrew Fournier made it a 2-0 Wings lead moments later with an unassisted wrap-around tally at 16:48.

The Wings grabbed a three-goal lead 38 seconds into the second period when forward Trent Daavettila lifted a shot over the glove of Loewen from Lloyd and Fournier. Forward Samson Mahbod put the Stingrays on the board at 2:14 beating Wings netminder Ryan Nie over the blocker for his fifth goal of the season. Forwards Rob Ricci and Dan Eves registered assists.

Wings forward Justin Taylor lit the lamp on the power play at the 4:00 mark of the third period from defenseman A.J. Thelen and forward Kory Karlander to reclaim a three-goal advantage. Karlander added an unassisted power-play marker at 16:03 to complete the game scoring.

Loewen suffered the loss stopping 39 of 44 Wings shots. Nie improved to 3-0-0 against the Stingrays pushing away 36 of 37 chances. The Stingrays ended the night 0-for-1 on the power play while the Wings finished 2-for-6.
