North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Cail MacLean announced today that the team has signed goaltender Shane Owen to an amateur tryout contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Owen, 20, joins the Stingrays after beginning the season with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) going 12-12-3 with a 3.09 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in 27 games. The Markham, ON native made his professional debut on January 30, 2011 with the Florida Everblades of the ECHL stopping 21 of 26 shots in an 8-4 loss to the Toledo Walleye.
Last season, Owen backstopped Moncton to the QMJHL Championship and 2010 Memorial Cup going 14-3-0 with a 2.12 GAA and .925 save percentage in 18 games. Prior to joining the Wildcats, the 6-foot-1, 182-pound netminder spent over two seasons with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) achieving a 16-29-4 record with a 4.10 goals-against average and .879 save percentage in 60 games.
The Stingrays wrap up their season-long six-game road trip on Wednesday, February 9 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center.
