North Charleston, SC – Forwards Pierre-Luc O’Brien and Trent Campbell each had a goal and an assist as the South Carolina Stingrays (8-3-0-0) toppled the Reading Royals (5-4-1-0) 5-2 in front on 3,369 at the North Charleston Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
Forward Matt Pope gave the Stingrays an early 1-0 lead at 3:50 of the first period firing a shot through traffic and between the legs of Royals goaltender Joe Palmer (L, 19 saves on 24 shots) from the right-wing point. Defensemen Johann Kroll and Paul Baier added the assists.
Campbell made it a two-goal Stingrays advantage at 3:30 of the second frame from O’Brienand defenseman Zach Tarkir. Moments later, O’Brien buried his sixth goal of the season on the power play from defenseman Derek Keller and Campbell at 9:29. Forward Anthony Maiani scored his first goal as a Stingray at 13:34 to make it 4-1. Forwards Danick Pauqette and Sean Dolan picked up the assists. The Royals jumped on the board at 15:34 when forward Matt Schepke slipped a rebound past Stingrays netminder Philipp Grubauer (W, 22 saves on 24 shots) along the bottom of the left-wing circle. Forward Everett Scheen and defenseman Rob Kwiett earned assists.
Royals forward Yannick Riendeau pulled the contest within two on the power play at 9:19 of the third period from forward Ryan Cruthers and defenseman Marvin Degon. Kroll sealed the victory for the Stingrays with a shorthanded unassisted empty-net goal at 18:47. The Stingrays finished the night 1-for-1 on the power play while the Royals went 1-for-5.
Before the contest, the Stingrays Alumni defeated the Hometown Heroes hockey team 14-4 as a part of Hometown Heroes Night.
The Stingrays start a four-game road trip on Thursday, November 10 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:35 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center and return to the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, November 19 for Epilepsy Awareness Night against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m.
