North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today that forward Matt Pope has been called up to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
Pope, 27, is tied for fourth in the ECHL with 17 points (6g, 11a) in 13 games with the Stingrays this season. The Langley, British Columbia, native also tops the league in power-play assists (7) and power-play points (4g, 7a). Last season, Pope skated in 55 games with the San Antonio Rampage (AHL) netting four goals and seven assists for 11 points. In addition to San Antonio, he also saw time in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose and Binghamton Senators totaling 27 points (11g, 16a) in 107 games.
Selected as a starter for the 2009 ECHL All-Star Game in Reading, Pennsylvania, and named to the 2009 ECHL All-Rookie Team, Pope began his professional career with the Bakersfield Condors (2008-09) recording 63 points (30g, 33a) in 54 contests. He also skated with the Condors during the 2009-10 campaign burying four goals and four assists for eight points in six games. Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward spent four seasons at Bemidji State University earning 71 points (33g, 38a) in 143 games.
The Stingrays wrap up a three-game series against the Greenville Road Warriors tonight at 7:35 p.m. at the Bi-Lo Center.
