North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Jared Bednar announced today that defensemen T.J. McElroy and Scott Romfo have re-signed for the 2007-08 season. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
McElroy, 24, collected eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in 65 games last season. The first-year pro led all Stingrays rookies with 110 penalty minutes, and finished second among defensemen with four power play goals. He also represented the Stingrays at the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game in Idaho, posting a +3 mark.
“T.J had a great rookie season for us,” Bednar said. “I’m looking forward to having him back on the blueline this year.”
Prior to joining South Carolina, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Golden Valley, Minn. played four years at St. Cloud State, collecting 11 points (6g, 5a) in 107 career matches for the Huskies.
In his first full season as a professional, Romfo, 26, led all Stingrays blueliners with 66 games played. He finished third among defensemen in scoring, totaling 25 points (5g, 20a) with 73 penalty minutes.
“Scott’s a steady presence on defense for us,” Bednar said. “His two-way play will be counted on again this season.”
Romfo originally joined the Stingrays in March 2006 following the completion of his senior year at RPI. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound defenseman registered 35 points (8g, 27a) in 123 career contests for the Engineers, and was a three-time member of the ECACHL All-Academic team.
