– As American Hockey League training camps open this week, several past and present Stingrays are vying for roster spots with a number of clubs. Marc Busenburg (Worcester Sharks), T.J. McElroy (Iowa Stars), and Davis Parley (Manitoba Moose) are three 2006-07 Stingrays attempting to earn AHL contracts for the coming season.
In 35 games for
last season, Busenburg, 29, registered 5 goals and 15 assists for 20 points. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman also saw action in 27 contests for the Hershey Bears, recording three assists and two penalty minutes for the two-time defending Calder Cup finalists.
McElroy, 24, led all Stingrays rookies with 110 penalty minutes in 2006-07, and finished second among defensemen with four power-play markers. The 6-foot, 210-pound blueliner also represented
at the 2007 ECHL All-Star Game, posting a +3 plus/minus rating.
Parley, 25, set franchise marks with 60 appearances and 3,522 minutes played last season while posting a 31-19-7 record and three shutouts. His 31 wins finished third in the ECHL, while his three shutouts tied for seventh. The 6-foor-2, 182-pound netminder also made his AHL debut in 06-07, stopping 21 shots for the Hershey Bears in a 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phantoms Jan. 24.
One-time Stingrays also participating in AHL training camps include defensemen Mark Ardelan (2004-05) and Deryk Engelland (2005-06) with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, G Mike Brown (2005-06) with the Providence Bruins, G Maxime Daigneault (2004-2006), G Jamie Hodson (2001-02), and LW Avery Wilson (2005-06) with the Milwaukee Admirals, and former ECHL Rookie of the Year Joey Tenute (2004-05) and Dave Spina (2005-06) with the San Antonio Rampage. 2006-07 Stingrays G Daren Machesney, C Travis Morin, D Sasha Pokulok, RW Stephen Werner, and C Kyle Wilson, meanwhile, are currently attending the Hershey Bears’ training camp. Defenseman Jamie Fraser and forward Michael Haley, another pair of 06-07 Stingrays, are taking part in the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' training camp, while d-man Donny Grover is in the Manchester Monarchs' camp.
