North Charleston, SC – South Carolina Stingrays’ captain Cail MacLean had two goals to pace the Rays as they defeated the Mississippi Sea Wolves 6-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“We came out there with a lot of energy tonight,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “I really like how we’ve played in the last two games. We came out rested and ready to play.”
South Carolina trailed in the first period, the only time in the game they would trail, when Ryan Menei would get a power play goal at 9:33. MacLean would tie things up, getting his first goal of the night, his 15th of the year, at 16:12. The goal came on the power play from Travis Morin and Chris Chaput.
The Rays took the lead for the first time in the second period when MacLean got his second tally of the night, his 16th of the year, from Trent Campbell at 4:25. After Mississippi tied the game up at two, Travis Morin got his sixth short handed goal of the year, his team leading 25th goal of the season, from Nate Kiser at 14:23. Morin extends his lead the ECHL in short handed goals to two, and South Carolina, now with 15 short handed goals on the year, continues to lead the league.
Energized from Morin’s short handed goal, the Stingrays came out flying in the third period. Chris Chaput got his 16th goal of the year from Morin and Marty Guerin, a power play goal at 2:27. Less than a minute later, at 3:13, Trent Campbell got his 11th goal of the year from Steve Pinizzotto to give the Rays a 5-2 lead. Nate Kiser put the nail in the coffin when he got his 4th goal of the year, a power play goal from Chaput and Morin at 7:32, to make the score 6-2, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Ryan Munce who stopped 34 of the 40 shots he faced. South Carolina went three for six on the power play while killing off four of the six short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to the Carolina Coliseum to take on the Columbia Inferno. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M
