North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays got two goals from Chris Chaput but couldn’t hold on in what was a showdown against the number one team in the ECHL, as the Texas Wildcatters won 6-4 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“We battled hard tonight,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “But that first period was really our undoing. We didn’t come out ready to play, and it cost us the game.”
Texas came out strong in the first period taking a 1-0 lead in the first two minutes. They would increase that lead to 2-0 before Chaput got his first goal of the night unassisted at 9:15 to cut the lead in half. Texas would add one more before the period would come to a close skating to the locker room up 3-1.
In the second period, the Rays came out with a vengeance and scored three goals in the first 8:30 minutes. Steve Pinizzotto got on the board to make it a 3-2 game, at 1:14 from Paul McIlveen and Trent Campbell. Just 2:10 later Pierre-Luc O’Brien tied the game up on his 9th goal of the season Matt Scherer and Marty Guerin. Chaput would get his second of the night, and his 21st of the season, at 8:23 from Travis Morin and Guerin on the power play. The latter half of the period however, would belong to the Wildcatters as they would get two more goals and take a 5-4 lead before the period would end.
The third period was a defensive battle in which no team really had the upper hand. With just under a minute to play the Rays pulled goaltender Davis Parley to get the extra attacker, but they were unable to score. An empty net goal by Texas salted the victory away by making it 6-4, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Kris Tebbs who relieved Jeff Pietrasiak in the second period. In the 30:24 that he played he stopped all 11 shots he faced. Pietrasiak stopped 15 of the 19 shots he faced. The losing goalie was Parley who stopped 28 of the 33 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-5 on the power play while killing off three of the five short handed situations they faced.
The Rays return to action tomorrow night when they host the Columbia Inferno on Pink in the Rink night. Help the South Carolina Stingrays stamp out cancer.
