North Charleston, SC – Bobby Goepfert turned aside all 26 shots that he faced in his first game as a member of the South Carolina Stingrays and Trent Campbell scored the game winning goal just 2:44 into the game, as the Rays defeated the Charlotte Checkers 3-0 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“We played a very consistent game tonight,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “We didn’t make too many mistakes and when we did, Goepfert was strong in net.”
The Stingrays came out firing early in the game and took the lead just 2:44 into the contest. Trent Campbell got his first goal of the season, a short handed goal, from Michael Dubuc. This was the first short handed goal that South Carolina has scored all year. With less than two minutes to go in the period the Rays made it a 2-0 lead. Paul McIlveen got his first goal of the season from Sasha Pokulok and Keith Johnson on the power play at 18:09.
South Carolina continued to play strong in the second period, something that had a been a problem in previous games. 14:40 into the period the Rays padded their lead. Steve Pinizzotto tipped in a shot from Zach Tarkir to get his first goal of the season, on the power play. The other assist was credited to Pierre-Luc O’Brien and gave the Stingrays a 3-0 lead, the eventual final.
The third period was a closely matched 20 minutes, with both teams having their chances. The period however belonged to the goaltenders with Goepfert turning aside 10 shots and Maxime Daigneault stopping 15 shots.
The winning goaltender was Goepfert who stopped all 26 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Daigneault who stopped 38 of the 41 shots he faced. The Stingrays went two for ten on the power play while killing off all six short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action on Saturday night when they travel to Charlotte to take on the Checkers once again. Game time will be at 7:00 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN 910 The TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 6:45.
