North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays out shot the Mississippi Sea Wolves 45 to 25 at the North Charleston Coliseum, but couldn’t get more than one goal past Ryan Munce, as they fell to the Wolves 2-1 tonight.
“I didn’t like the first period too much,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “I thought we played much grittier hockey in the last two periods. We worked hard in this game; I hate losing, but this is a loss I can live with.”
Mississippi took advantage of a missed play by the Stingrays defense and Mark Rooneem unleashed a wrist shot from the nearside circle that found its way to the back of the goal gave the Sea Wolves an early 1-0 at the 4:25 mark of the period. The Stingrays would respond in kind when at 11:51 Travis Morin got his 10th goal of the year on a rebound from a Maxime Lacroix shot. The goal was assisted by Lacroix and Jeff Corey and tied the game up at one.
The second period just one goal and it came on the power play by Aleandre Parent at 10:42. The goal came when Parent found himself all alone in front of the net and put it behind Bobby Goepfert. The goal made it a 2-1 Mississippi lead going into the third period.
The Stingrays continued to bombard Ryan Munce with shots in the third period, totaling 17, but even with all the shots and all the opportunities, they had three power plays in the period, they were unable to get the equalizer and fell by a final of 2-1.
The winning goaltender was Munce who stopped 44 of the 45 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-7 on the power play while killing off four of the five short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action Friday night when they play host to the Gwinnett Gladiators here at the North Charleston Coliseum. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M. You can hear the game live on REAL 1340 starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 6:50.
