Stingrays Stage Comeback but Fall in Shootout, 5-4

By:

Duluth, GA – The South Carolina Stingrays trailed by scores of 3-0 and 4-1, but were able to comeback to tie up the game at four before falling to the Gwinnett Gladiators 5-4 in the shootout.

“I think we played great in the second half of the game,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “But like the last game we played, we didn’t come out strong enough and dug a hole for ourselves.”

Things did not start out the way the Stingrays had planned as they gave up three goals by the Gladiators in the first ten minutes of play. Andy Brandt, Adam Hobson and Adam Berti all notched goals before the halfway point of the period giving Gwinnett the 3-0 lead. The Rays would get on the board later in the period on Maxime Lacroix’s 17th goal of the year. The goal was the result of Jeff Corey bringing the puck in the zone and working it through the defense before finding Lacroix on the backdoor play. The goal came at 12:10 and was assisted by Corey and Viktor Dovgan to make it a 3-1 game after one period of play.

The second period started out much closer than the first period did. It wasn’t until after the 12 minute mark when the first goal was scored. Gwinnett got their second power play goal of the night on a shot by Daniel Sullivan which knocked off of a skate and into the net to make it a 4-1 game. But with only ten seconds left in the period, Michael Dubuc got his team leading 19th goal. After bringing the puck into the zone, he dropped it off for Sasha Pokulok who found him on the far side post with an open net. The goal came at 19:50 and was assisted by Pokulok and Brad Farynuk to make it a 4-2 game after two periods of play.

The Rays scored twice in the third period to tie the game up at four. The first goal came on the power play from Brad Farynuk as he tipped in a shot from Johann Kroll past Joe Fallon to make it a 4-3. The goal came at 4:04 from Farynuk, his sixth goal of the year, from Kroll and Dubuc. Later in the period, Lacroix got his second goal of the night to tie things up at four. The goal was Lacroix’s 18th, from Bryson Busniuk and Dovgan at 13:12.

Neither team was able to score in overtime and the game went to a shootout. In the first round of the shootout, no one scored, but in the second round, Jeff Mason took the 1-0 lead in the shootout. After a scoreless third round, Adam Hobson scored to win the game in the shootout.

The winning goaltender was Fallon who stopped 31 out of the 35 shots he faced while stopping all four shootout shots he faced. The losing goaltender Goepfert who stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced and stopped two of the four shootout chances. The Rays went 1-5 on the power play while killing six of the eight shorthanded situations they faced.

We’ll be back on Saturday afternoon when the Rays travel to Charlotte, NC to take on the Charlotte Checkers. Game time will be at 1:00 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 12:45
