North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays suffered their first shutout loss of the season, as they fell to the Florida Everblades 4-0 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“I like the way we came out early in the game,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “But in the final two periods we just got outplayed by [Florida].”
The first period was a competitive twenty minutes as neither team could get on the board. The Rays had the best opportunity when Michael Dubuc got pulled down on a breakaway and was granted a penalty shot. On the ensuing shot, Dubuc got under the puck and sent it up over the net.
In the second period, things took a turn for the worse as the Everblades struck first with a goal by Matt Auffrey on a breakaway at 9:43. Less than three minutes later, Mathieu found himself on a breakaway and scored past Stingrays goalie Michal Neuvirth to make it a 2-0 game. Prior to the end of the period, Adrew Sweetland would make it a 3-0 game on his fourth goal of the year at 16:34.
Early in the third period, the Everblades would strike again, this time Ross Carlson getting his ninth goal of the year, on a power play at 5:02. The Rays could only get five shots in the period, and none found their way past David Leggio.
The winning goaltender was Leggio who stopped all 24 shots he faced, en route to his fourth shutout of the year. The losing goaltender was Neuvirth who stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-4 on the power play, while killing off six of the seven short handed situations they faced.
The Rays return to action on Saturday as they look to turn things around against the Mississippi Sea Wolves. It’s “Pack the House” night, so be sure to get your $5 ticket as the game is sure to sell out. The game will start at 7:05 with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 6:50 on REAL 1340.
