North Charleston, SC – The South Carolina Stingrays had to turn away hundreds of fans trying to get tickets to the Stingray’s “Pack the House” night; but it was worth the effort for the record crowd of 10,568 that did make it into the game, as the Rays lathered the Mississippi Sea Wolves 6-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“It’s not hard to get up for a game like this,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “The thing I like best about this game is that we played a full 60 minutes of hockey. There were no passengers in this game.”
The Stingrays scored early and often in this game as Spencer Carbery got his second goal as a member of the Stingrays and his seventh of the year as he knocked in a rebound past Jeremy Duchesne at 3:23. The goal was assisted by Mike Curry and Johann Kroll. At 12:48, the Rays made it a 2-0 game on a play by Keith Johnson. As Johnson brought the puck into the zone, he split the defense and made a perfect pass to Michael Dubuc who one-timed it past Duchesne. The goal was Dubuc’s 21st and was assisted by Johnson and Scott Romfo. They would make it 3-0 before the period would close on a Brad Farynuk tally. Farynuk pushed a pass through Duchesne for his eighth goal of the year. The goal was assisted by Maxime Lacroix and Travis Morin at 16:26 on the power play.
In the second period, the Stingrays picked up where they left off in the first. At 7:18, Farynuk saucered a pass through the neutral zone and right onto the stick of Curry who shot it through the five-hole of Duchesne to make it a 4-0 game. The goal was Curry’s third of the year, his second as a member of the Stingrays, and was assisted by Farynuk and Viktor Dovgan.
The third period was a back and forth affair with both teams scoring a pair of goals. After Mike Berry got on the board for Mississippi, the Rays answered back. Maxime Lacroix got his 19th goal of the year, on the power play, from Morin and Farynuk at the 10:00 mark. Scott Romfo got the Stingrays’ sixth goal of the night, after Ryan Menei potted the second of the night, to make it a 6-2 game, the eventual final. Romfo tipped in a shot to get his third of the year from Morin and Kroll on the power play.
The winning goaltender was Ian Vigier who stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Duchesne who stopped 29 of the 35 shots he faced. The Rays went 3-6 on the power play while killing off three of the four shorthanded shots they faced.
We’ll be back on Monday afternoon when the Rays take on the Gwinnett Gladiators. Game time will be at 12:30 P.M. You can hear the game live on ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 12:15
