Charlotte, NC – Nate Kiser scored his fourth goal of the year in the third period, but the Rays could not overtake the Charlotte Checkers as they fell 3-2 at the Time Warner Cable Arena.
“I still feel that we are getting outworked for parts of the game,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “The losses are starting to pile up; with the personnel we have, we should be playing better than we are.”
Although they had to kill off three penalties, including a five on three for over :25 seconds, the South Carolina Stingrays had the better of the opportunities in the first period against the Checkers. The best chance that the Rays had in the period actually took place while on the penalty kill. While killing off their first penalty of the night, Maxime Lacroix took the face off all the way down the length of the ice to get a breakaway, but could not put it by Maxime Daigneault. The period, though void of scoring, was not without action, as both Nate Kiser and Spencer Carbery had fights with Cedrick Bernier and Ethan Graham respectively.
David Rutherford got the Checkers on the board in the second period, with his ninth goal of the year. While on the power play, Rutherford shot a one-timer by Ian Vigier to give the Checkers the 1-0 lead. The goal came at 8:11 and was assisted by Ryan Hillier and Brad Ralph. The Rays would have an answer, as they would tie things up just four minute later. While with the extra attacker on the ice following a delayed penalty, Spencer Carbery would jam a rebound past Daigneault for his eighth goal of the year, his third as a member of the Stingrays. The goal, at 12:14, was assisted by Mike Curry and Johann Kroll.
In the third period, the Checkers got back to back goals in the span of :45 seconds, to take a 3-1 lead at the 7:52 mark of the period. Though the Rays would cut that lead back to one, with Nate Kiser getting his fourth goal of the year at 14:41 from Matt Scherer and Spencer Carbery, it would not be enough. The Rays pulled their goalie in the final minute but could not get the equalizer and fell by a final of 3-2 to the Checkers.
The winning goaltender was Daigneault who stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Vigier who stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-4 on the power play while killing off four of the six short handed situations the faced.
The Rays will be back tomorrow from Biloxi, Mississippi when they take on the Mississippi Sea Wolves. Game time will be at 6:00 P.M. eastern Time. You can here the game live on ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos Pre-game show beginning at 5:45.
