North Charleston, SC – Maxime Lacroix scored twice, and the South Carolina Stingrays came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period, but fell in overtime to the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
“I think the guys are doing all they can right now,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “We worked hard, limited their chances, and had some great chances to win this game. If we keep playing like this, the wins will come.”
The Stingrays came out quickly in the first period, not allowing a shot for the first five minutes of the game. But as has been the norm, Joe Fallon played solid in the period and kept the Rays off the board. The Gladiators took the lead at the 16:28 mark of the period on Jordan Fox’s 15th goal of the year to make it 1-0.
The second period played out much like the first one did. After pressuring in the first few minutes, the Rays gave up a quick goal off a rebound to Jeff Mason, his fifth of the year. The goal came at 2:39 of the period from Dirk Southern and Pat Bateman and made it a 2-0 game.
The Stingrays jumped on the comeback trail early in the third period, getting on the board just :51 seconds into the period on Maxime Lacroix’s 20th goal of the year. The goal was assisted by Nate Kiser and Travis Morin and cut the lead in half for Gwinnett. Less than four minutes later Lacroix would strike again, netting his 21st of the year, and team leading seventh goal against the Gladiators this season. The tying goal came 4:42, on the power play, and was assisted by Brad Farynuk and Johann Kroll.
The score would remain tied up through regulation and into overtime. After taking a penalty, the Rays had two very good short handed opportunities, but could not convert. After surviving the assault, the Gladiators scored on a rebound by Adam Berti to win the game 3-2. The goal came on the power play at 2:18 of overtime.
The winning goaltender was Joe Fallon who stopped 49 of the 51 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Ian Vigier who stopped 28 of the 31 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-3 on the power play while killing off four of the six shorthanded situations they faced.
