Stingrays Acquire Forward Garret Ross From Komets

The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, completed a trade Sunday to acquire forward Garret Ross from the Fort Wayne Komets in exchange for forward Jake Kamrass.Ross, a 26-year-old native of Dearborn Heights, Mich. has suited up for eight games with the Komets this year, posting two assists. The attacker is in his sixth professional season, his first in the ECHL after playing the last five years in the American Hockey League with the Rockford IceHogs, Tucson Roadrunners and Rochester Americans.“We’re excited to have Garret and add his experience and skill set to our lineup,” said Stingrays head coach Spiros Anastas. “He’s a hard-nosed veteran who has a presence when he plays and can produce offensively. He brings a wealth of AHL experience and we believe he can be a key contributor to the development of some of our younger forwards. We look forward to seeing his compete level in our lineup on a nightly basis.”

Originally a 5th round NHL Draft selection by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2012, Ross has played in 288 career contests at the AHL level, scoring 114 points on 51 goals and 63 assists. His highest offensive output came during the 2014-15 season with Rockford when he produced 43 points on 21 goals and 22 assists in 69 games.The 6-foot, 175-pound forward played 217 games in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Saginaw Spirit from 2009-2013 and scored 170 points (82 goals, 88 assists). During his final year with the Spirit in 2015-16, Ross served as an alternate captain and posted 90 points (44 goals, 46 assists).Kamrass has played in 10 games with the Stingrays this season, scoring eight points on five goals and three assists.“It is always tough to let go of people you like and respect,” Anastas said. “Jake has a really bright future in this league and beyond. He’s a power forward who can finish and we know he will flourish at his new destination. It’s part of the business, giving away pieces to get pieces you need, but it’s never easy. We wish Jake all the best.”The forward joined South Carolina late last season after finishing his collegiate career with UMass-Lowell and had 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 12 ECHL regular season games before appearing in four Kelly Cup Playoff games.The Stingrays play their next game in Jacksonville during the Icemen’s School Day on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. South Carolina will return home to the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 10 for Health and Wellness Night presented by Planet Fitness against the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:05 p.m.
