Berkeley Electric Cooperative Bright Ideas Spotlight

What if your art class looked more like an inventor's workshop? At Dr.Eugene Sires Elementary School, it's about to! The Cardboard Engineering and Wearable Art Design Lab is turning the art room into a full-on STEAM innovation studio where students dream up, build and wear their own creative solutions to real-world problems. Think safety gear, kindness badges and gadgets straight out of a kid's imagination. Congratulations to Kellene Smith and Abby Clark for being selected as 2026 Berkeley Electric Bright Ideas Education Grant winners! We love seeing educators who equip students with the tools and confidence to become inventors.

Great ideas don't always come from a classroom, sometimes they roll right in! Brooke McLoughlin and Jennie Church at Johns Island Elementary are bringing Innovation Stations: STEAM on Wheels to life with mobile maker carts stocked with building materials, construction tools, and everything students need to dream up, build, test, and improve their own creations. From ramps to roller coasters to geometric structures, 2nd–5th graders will tackle real engineering challenges and discover what they're capable of one design at a time. We love seeing educators who bring creativity and innovation to every corner of their school.

Every student learns differently, and Miranda Heider at H.E. Bonner Elementary School is making sure her classroom reflects that reality. By redesigning her space with flexible seating and hands-on learning tools, students are free to move, explore and engage in ways that work best for them. From literacy centers to math activities, learning becomes something students lean into rather than sit through.
