NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – From 2009 through 2015, the name “Joey Z” and the South Carolina Stingrays were nearly synonymous. Joseph “Joey Z” Zarkrzewski’s voice rang across the airwaves for six years and now he’s getting the national callup to the NHL by the Chicago Blackhawks.
“I’m entering my 15th year of broadcasting and I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity,” says Zarkrzewski. “It also makes me reflect on all the teams I’ve ever worked with and the talented people I’ve met along the way. There’s a lot of pride and self-motivation working in the professional development leagues, and knowing I’ve been given this chance makes it worth all the late nights and long seasons.”
Zakrzewski left the Stingrays in the summer of 2015 to join the AHL’s Ontario Reign as their Director of Communications and Broadcasting. Following two and a half years in Ontario, the Texas native joined the Rockford IceHogs, serving as the “Voice of the IceHogs” since the 2017 season.
“I learned all the basics of broadcasting and more at my time in South Carolina. I learned how all the departments in the organization have to work together, including broadcasting, to make a season successful. I also was able to grow and hone my craft as a broadcaster, including the behind-the-scenes aspect that I would’ve never learned if I didn’t stop in Lowcountry.”
As of now, Zakrzewski has two games planned through the first two and a half months of Blackhawks games, but don’t be surprised to see that expanded in the second half of the year.
The Stingrays will open the 2021-22 season on October 23 in North Charleston against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 6:05 p.m.
