After opening the season with five straight wins for the first time since 2002-03, the Stingrays suffered their first loss on Sunday, falling 5-2 to the Atlanta Gladiators at the North Charleston Coliseum. Atlanta’s five goals are the most South Carolina has allowed in a game this season, with four coming in the third period, and South Carolina’s two goals are its fewest. Bouncing back is something this group did well last year, when the Stingrays went 17-9-1 in games following a loss in 2025-26.

The Stingrays’ power play ranks first in the ECHL at 38.1%, nearly nine percentage points ahead of second-place Greenville (29.2%). South Carolina has scored a power-play goal in five of its first six games.

Special teams were crucial the last time these two teams met, as the Stingrays scored four power-play goals in a 5-3 win over the Solar Bears on October 24th at the Kia Center. Tyler Weiss scored twice, and South Carolina killed all five of Orlando’s power plays. Friday is the second of ten matchups between these teams this season and South Carolina’s seventh of ten straight South Division games to open the year.

The Solar Bears are coming off their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over divisional foe Atlanta on Tuesday at the Kia Center. Goaltender Ryan Bednard made 29 saves for his first shutout and win of the season, and Milo Roelens scored the game’s only goal in the second period.

Aaron Luchuk has led Orlando’s offense with six points in the team’s first five games. For South Carolina, Weiss leads the way with eight points, and Tyler Kopff and Alex Gaffney are tied for the team lead with five assists each. Friday will also be the Stingrays’ first game without goal-scoring leader Ryan Sandelin, who signed a professional tryout contract (PTO) with the AHL’s Rochester Americans on Tuesday.
